Red Cross Apps: 1 Year, 3 Million Downloads

It’s been one year since the American Red Cross launched its First Aid App, the first of what is now a collection of five Red Cross apps. Their success with the public is evidenced not only in the number of downloads — more than 3 million — but more importantly, in stories of emergencies handled and lives saved.

The Stats
June 2012 – The First Aid App launches. It is the most popular app, with more than 1.4 million downloads.

October 2012 – The Wildfire App. Downloaded 56,000 times.

March 2013 – The Tornado App. In just three months, it already has more than 594,000 downloads.

The Accolades
The five Red Cross apps are a hit with the public, with average ratings of 4.5 out of 5.0 stars given by users. In addition to these positive reviews, the apps have also caught the attention of the media and have earned some notable awards. Here are a few of the highlights:

  • The suite of apps received the “Best in Show – Most Life Changing Product” award at the recent CTIA-The Wireless Association Conference.
  • CNN named the Tornado App one of the “7 apps to survive a tornado.”
  • The Hurricane App recently received the “Outstanding Achievement” award at this year’s National Hurricane Conference, and Time called this app one of “8 apps for keeping tabs on the ‘storm of the century.’”

The Stories
Users of the Red Cross apps have shared their stories of how the apps have helped them in emergencies—from first aid situations to life-threatening events such as the recent Oklahoma tornadoes.

“(The app) saved my life,” one app user posted. “I was in Oklahoma when the twister hit. The warning came on and I had enough time to gather everybody up and discuss our plan. We checked some info about where to go safely using the app and we found the best places. Thanks to this, me, my kids, my wife, my parents and their neighbors are all safe.”

“I was in my friend’s car,” another app user posted, “when suddenly a friend of mine start(ed) having a seizure. I immediately looked at this app for help while calling 9-1-1 on another phone. I told the police about it and they said that there’s a good chance the information in this app saved my friend’s life.”

All the Red Cross apps can be found in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for Android by searching for American Red Cross.
